Walk on the Wildside 2

This past weekend was granddaughter time again. The house comes alive with laughter, noise, laundry and cooking! Amidst all of that, we had party for all of the April birthdays-there are 5 of them. 2 granddaughters, a daughter, a son-in-law and Hubby all were born in April. The party was NOT here this time and that made it even more fun for me. :) We did bake and frost 2 cakes, made a batch of brownies and a big bowl of from scratch coleslaw with lots and lots of help from the grands.

The adventure-a walk in the same woods of 2 weeks ago, we saved for Sunday afternoon. It was a little wet and the plants and briers had all grown some, but that didn't stop us! Our first wildflower...

is unknown, but has very tiny delicate blooms.

Next we saw Mayapples. I was thinking they should be in bloom, when one of the girls looked underneath and found the flower.

One to a plant, and you had to get low to see them, but it was well worth the effort.

The girls and I decided this one was pretty enough to bring home to my gardens, but we thought better of it and left it for the woodland creatures to enjoy. Any ideas on what it's name is?

Golden Ragwort-thanks Linda @ Garden Girl!

We visited the tadpoles again, showing the youngest granddaughter the joys of scooping them up in cupped hands. This was her first walk in the woods. Fortunately, none of the girls are squeamish and all seem to enjoy anything to do with nature. : ) Just past the pond we saw this tree with these buds. Looks almost like a honeysuckle bud, but it is a tree. Again, I need an ID.

I've saved the best for the last. At least, I think so. I am thinking it is some type of lily. It reminds me of a peace lily in shape-sort of. What do you think it is?

Jack in the Pulpit or Lords and Ladies-thanks to Lisa, Cheryl and Joey!

What would a walk in the woods be with out climbing on a fallen tree?

One final note. If any one would like baby maple trees, just let me know....

I have a gazillion of them!

To all those who have suffered damage from the storms and flooding, take care and know we are all praying for you.

Have a great gardening week!

Another great time with the granddaughters I see Beckie. I love the pretty blooms on those Mayapples. I would love to have a patch of them, but not enough full shade in my yard. :)

I don't know the names of all the plants but the last one you think of as lily is a Jack in the pulpit. Common name of course. I think Cheryl calls them Lords and Ladies. What a great day out with the girls. A belated Happy Birthday to S.

Sounds like a wonderful time walking thru the woods. I like that pic of all the kids in the trees. Reminds me of how I loved climbing trees when I was a little girl. Of course, as soon as my mom saw me she yelled at me to get down before I fell and broke my arm.

So enjoy your granddaughter posts, dear Beckie. Your surprise is a Jack-in-the-Pulpit, one of my favorites that I have huge families of, rambling throughout my wildflower bed. Will be happy to share if you ever are near.

Hi Beckie......so pleased you enjoyed the party. My husband and daughters birthday are in April.

What a lovely walk....so please the girls are wildlife observers. They will always have a place to go when lifes problems become to much. Nature is very healing. You also give them memories to cherish.

The beautiful wild plants you said reminded you of a lily is your 'jack in the pulpit'
We call them lords and ladies, they grow in abundance in my gardens, and I love them. In the autumn all that will be left is a stick of bright red berries. They are poisonous by the way....children learn this way.
Poppi understands berries are a no no unless Nanna gives them to her.

The grands look well and happy Beckie.
I remember the days I could climb a tree, actually I think I still could.....lol

Racquel, time spent with the girls is always fun. Mayapple blooms reminded me of hellebores with their downward facing blooms.

Lisa, you are right of course! For years I have been calling a trillium Jack in the Pulpit! I googled it and there it was. :) No luck on the other ones though. Some one else has a b-day soon. :)

Susie, we have a tree here that the girls love to climb. Their great grandma (lived across the street) used to fuss at them for climbing saying the same thing. I finally told her to let them be. Even though I worry about them falling, they have so much fun I want them to be kids!

Joey, thanks. How great to have them in your garden. I would love to have a few for my shaded area, but it may not be wet enough. When yours strat blooming you will have to take photos.

Cheryl, hope yours had happy b-days. :) These 5 younger ones are nature-outdoor lovers. Tom boys all and yet they love to dress up and be all pretty. :)

I like the name Lords and Ladies-such a regal sounding name for a gorgeous plant. You will have to show photos when they bloom. The odd thing is, we only saw this one plant on our walk. It was at least 3 feet tall and the leaves were huge.

We are learning not to touch any berries and to leave for the birds. Poppi is lucky to have you to guide her.

I'll bet you could climb a tree! Wouldn't that be fun to be way up there and enjoying the thrill!?

Hi Beckie, don't you just love those wildflowers! I think the yellow daisy-looking one is golden ragwort, a/k/a Senecio aureus. We have them in our garden (a blogalong passalong from Gail.) This spring, although they weren't blooming yet, I recognized them in my mom's woods too, and have seen them growing wild around here too.

They seem to be a fairly common native plant, a little 'spready,' but easy to control and very nice to have in the garden.

Happy belated birthdays to all your April-born grands and others. (Just thinking about all those birthdays in one month makes me a little tired!)

Remember how much trouble we had last summer i.d.ing the yellow wildflowers at Meadowbrook? Even with my wildflower book, they all look alike:) Linda's suggestion sounds like a good one and does fit the photo I have in my book.

I know the granddaughters look forward to every weekend they spend with you, Beckie; you are making such special memories for them. Love the photo of them in the tree!

A belated Happy Birthday to Hubby and Daughter! I'm off to the airport in a few hours...I plan to visit the Rose Garden this time; I hope a few are in bloom!

What a lovely gaggle of grandkids:)

Beckie, your nature walks are a wonderful learning experience for the kids. I hope they keep these happy memories and grow up to have a great appreciation for nature.

You sure do give those "grands" a good time Beckie. I love all the cooking and other activities you do with them. I'm sure you are making some beautiful memories for them to keep forever.
My favorite picture is the one of them in the trees. You should blow that up and frame it!
Love all your wildflower photos too. I should get out around here and try and track some down.

What a fun weekend. It's so awesome you saw a Jack in the Pulpit in the wild. I think your mystery tree is honeysuckle. It grows in shrub/tree form as well as vine form. It is a very invasive plant but pretty. I have a few around my garden. Most I pull but sometimes I leave it. Happy Birthday to all as well. What a great idea to have one party for everyone.

Linda, blogging has gotten me more interested in wild flowers. I remember them as kids when we'd go exploring, but had gotten away from them. Now, with the grands along we are so enjoying learning about them and seeing their beauty. Thanks for the ID-bloggers are a wonderful bunch!

beckie said...

Rose, we should get the grands together for nature walks this summer. I am thinking you may get to see some different wildflowers on your trip-be sure to take photos! And of course take lots of the Rose Garden. :)

beckie said...

Marnie, they are a gaggle alright! I feel very privileged to be in their lives. They keep me young at heart if not in limb. :)

Kathleen, I hadn't thought of enlargeing the tree photo, but will now. Thanks for the suggestion! I try to do lots of different things with them-let them see what is out there and where their interests may lie. But we have fun with anything we do.

I would think wildflowers should be starting in your area-they make great photo opps!

Tina. I didn't know that honeysuckle could be in tree form. I thought that's what the buds looked like. I will have to go back shortly and see what the blooms look like. Thanks!

It looks like you all had a great time. I wonder if that tree is a Chionanthus virginicus (Fringe Tree)? I wish I could say for sure, but mine has yet to bloom.

Hi Beckie.
I just wanted to tell you where I got the spanish bluebells ~ from John Scheepers. They should be putting out a new catalog soon but you can go online (www.johnscheepers.com) and see if you can check it out. I think they'd look beautiful combined with Virginia bluebells ~ great idea! Good luck!

Your header photo of the lilacs? is wonderful! Everywhere I look on the web I hear about lilacs. I so miss the sweet scent of them.

Hi Beckie, happy birthdays to all. The lily-like plant is Jack in the pulpit. I was thinking the little white flower is mitre-wort, but it's so not. I'm going to ask my friend who knows about wildflowers, because now it's bugging me. I know I've seen it before!

The best flowers on your blog are the granddaughters! That last photo of maple seeds is scary.... each one of those could be a tree! Wow.

Hi Beckie, first of all let me say a big thank-you for your kind words and thoughts as I struggle through these difficult times. My blogger buddies are the best. And I feel all of your loving support.

I also like the grands best! Your walk was lovely and I enjoyed stomping through the woods with you. Even scooping up tadpoles - I don't mind a bit!

Must tell you that my hubby's birthday is also in April.
April 4th, which fell on easter this year. He had a good birthday - it was warm outside and we sat on the back deck.

The wildflowers are all lovely and the wild girls are lovelier still! I know in years to come, they will have wonderful memories of their walks in the woods with you.

The maple trees must know something we don't :), I have never seen so many seeds, I shudder to think of all the extra weeding they are going to create. Great photos!

It looks like a wonderful time was had by all. I used to love walking in the woods with my kids. Sometimes we made a picnic out of it. Time with family is so well spent!
